Niel Anderson Hancock Jan. 8, 1941 - May 7, 2011
A very special human being was born January 8, 1941 in Clovis, New Mexico, and left this life as we know it May 7, 2011. He was on his yearly spring motorcycle trip with his beloved BMW, Sophia DeVille, and while on his way home he died suddenly of a thoracic aortic aneurysm. He spent 70 years on this planet of ours, but somehow experienced 270 years of living. His storytelling, his compassion and kindness are legendary; his friends span the US, the Virgin Islands, and beyond. His intelligence and his imagination were astounding. Niel enjoyed people and found everyone had a story to tell. He was always available when someone needed to talk and has helped countless people along his way. Niel loved animals, he loved to laugh, he loved to drink coffee and chat with friends. Niel also was a deeply private man and cherished his solitude. I have personally known and been blessed to be married to Niel close to 27 years and he is still the kindest and most interesting human being I have ever had the privilege to know. He spent all of this life on his Quest to the Sacred Mountain, although the Path was circuitous and fraught with many detours, pits and valleys, rivers, and other distractions. But, always he was drawn back along his Spiritual Path. Niel was an accomplished writer with 13 books in print. They are "historical mythologies" and reflect his spiritual attitudes. He served honorably in the military as an Army MP during the Vietnam Era (1966-1968). He spent his time in Vietnam stationed in Saigon during the first weeks of the TET offensive. His experience in the military had a profound influence on Niel for the remainder of his life. Niel is survived by his wife, C.E. Ursin, A.K.A Toasty, who adored him, his "step" son and daughter-in-law, Tad and Shari Ochs and our two dear grandchildren, Kyle and Malia; his sister-in-law, Marya Ursin and her husband Dan Potter and her daughter Ana Tiwathia. He is also survived by his family in Farwell, Texas, where he was raised by his beloved grandparents; his uncle, Bob Anderson and his wife Caroline and their son, Will and Will's wife Ginger; Marilyn Edwards and her daughter Teri and son-in-law Tom Nichols and their four grown sons, Logan, Jordan, Taylor, Tate. Also, last but not least, he is sorely missed by his two Bengal cats, Kato and Niko and our last ferret, Marchello, all who loved him clearly, and the feral cats, whom we care for at night, miss his kind voice and quiet stories and gentle hand; and one large raccoon. The funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31st at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery (1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, TX). Following the service friends and family are invited to a gathering in remembrance of Niel at the Club Giraud in San Antonio. A map will be provided.
